In making an unusually direct and high-profile appeal in remarks at George Mason University in northern Virginia, Mr. Obama was building on a campaign for swift economic action that he has conducted for weeks — each time in ever-sharper terms. Every day this week he has issued a sobering message about the nation’s perilous economic outlook, intended to prepare the public for difficult times, to show investors that he is focusing on the global crisis, and to goad reluctant members of Congress to act decisively. “I don’t believe it’s too late to change course, but it will be if we don’t take dramatic action as soon as possible,” Mr. Obama said. “If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits.

The reason we are here today is because the people’s business cannot wait,” Obama said as he arrived on Capitol Hill in late morning for talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “The speaker and her staff have been extraordinarily helpful in working with our team so we can shape an economic recovery plan and start putting people back to work.

The president-elect is closely monitoring global events, including the situation in Gaza,” his national security spokeswoman Brooke Anderson said in a statement after the ground assault got underway. But she offered no further comment on the violence in Gaza and used a phrase repeated often by Obama and his aides: “There is one president at a time and we intend to respect that.

Obama, who arrived in Washington last night, is meeting with congressional leaders from both parties and his top economic advisers to shore up support and help craft an economic recovery plan that includes infrastructure spending and tax cuts to stimulate growth and create or save 3 million jobs. With the nation in the middle of a recession, the economic stimulus plan is Obama’s top priority, even before he takes office on Jan. 20. The president-elect is spending his days until then trying to garner support, and he plans to deliver an economic speech on Jan. 8.

I reiterate my call for Russia to stop its bombing campaign, to stop flights of Russian aircraft in Georgian airspace, and to withdraw its ground forces from Georgia. The Georgian government has proposed a cease-fire and the Russian government should accept it. There is also an urgent need for humanitarian assistance to reach the people of Georgia, and casualties on both sides. The United States, Europe and all other concerned countries must stand united in condemning this aggression, and seeking a peaceful resolution to this crisis. We should continue to push for a United Nations Security Council Resolution calling for an immediate end to the violence. This is a clear violation of the sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of Georgia - the UN must stand up for the sovereignty of its members, and peace in the world.

President-Elect Obama strongly condemns today’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the people of India. These coordinated attacks on innocent civilians demonstrate the grave and urgent threat of terrorism. The United States must continue to strengthen our partnerships with India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks.
